Havana, Cuba
METRO BIG BAND
March 1 - 10, 2024
This was a very unique project for us. Typically, we go to Cuba on religious visas, but this time we were invited to come with cultural visas. This opened the door for us to teach in music schools for the first time and also perform concerts in two major theaters in Matanzas and Havana.
The concerts in the theaters were extremely well received by the people, as we not only played music, but we also shared of God's faithfulness to his people, through stories like Jericho, and how God's plan is for everyone.
We absolutely loved being at the schools. The level of talent that these kids have is off the charts. Twenty one percent of the population of Cuba is involved in music production, either as a student, teacher, or professional. Their level of musicianship is truly astounding.
A number of the students asked us questions about why we were there, which gave us the opportunity to share about our 'true' purpose beyond our music. Although we were there to teach the students, we also connected with the faculty and had some wonderful conversations with them about our music and our message. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to begin new relationships that we hope will continue in the future.
We are very proud of our host, Alioth Gonzales, who started a school of music with an emphasis on sharing the Gospel. It was a joy to hear the students that played and all that they’ve accomplished. The school primarily focuses on string instruments. They started with 10 students, and they’ve grown to over 100 students! They’re currently in the process of launching a second location.
We also had the amazing opportunity to perform with Frank Fernandez, an internationally known concert pianist, who is considered to be a national treasure in Cuba. We joined him on the Gershwin composition, "Rhapsody in Blue". Being able to play with him and rehearse all week gave us the opportunity to build a relationship with him and his wife. We can't wait to see them on our next trip to Cuba very soon.
The week concluded with a concert in the main theater in Havana. It seats 2500 people, and every seat was filled because of the people's love and respect for Frank Fernandez. They definitely connected with our music, but also our message. We believe that God opened this unique door for us to grow His continued impact through GMP in Cuba, and can’t wait to see what’s ahead.
