MUSIC TEACHING

Workshops and Master Classes

WHAT ARE WORKSHOPS AND MASTER CLASSES?

Teaching music is an important way that we build relationships with people we meet on our projects. Typically we’re either in a group setting with the entire orchestra, or split into each section for master classes.

In the countries we go to, we find that even though they may be great players, they often don't have basic skills, like, how to tune or even how to put their instrument together properly. Teaching basics is a great place to start, but we also provide music that you can use to teach with.

WHAT’S MY ROLE?

Typically there is one person that leads the group, but everyone can assist in demonstrating and being helpful. And don't worry, you will have a translator!

Some people may choose to walk around and take pictures of each master class that we can use for social media. Whatever your role is, just sending a smile and being helpful goes a long way with building relationships, which is our ultimate goal.

 HOW CAN I PREPARE?

We have a beginner and intermediate book as a resource for you. There may be particular exercises in the book that stick out to you that you want to print and take with you (you don't have to print the entire book). Remember to print multiple copies.

Again, basics are always helpful - like tuning, posture, breathing, etc - which don't require any music. Also, they may already be working on a specific piece of music that they want your help with.

The bottom line is, don't stress about it. This is a time to connect with others and show the love of Christ.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

  • Ask God to guide you. He already knows who you'll be interacting with and what they need.

  • A smile goes a long way even if you don't speak the same language!

  • They want to learn from you - so whatever you offer, they will be thankful for.
